الفيروس الرملي الثديي (الاسم العلمي: Mammarenavirus) هو جنسٌ من الفيروسات ضمن عائلة الفيروس الرملي.[1] يُعد الاسم العلمي للفيروس منحوتًا من الثدييات (mammal) والاسم السابق (Arenavirus)، مما يميزه عن الفيروس الرملي الزاحفي [English] (الاسم العلمي: Reptarenavirus).[2] تأتي تسمية (Arenavirus) من اللاتينية (arena) والتي تعني الرمل؛ وذلك لمظهره الرملي في الفيريون.[3]

Derivation of name Arena: from Latin arenosus, "sandy" and arena, "sand", in recognition of the sand-like particles observed in thin section. The name originally proposed was arenovirus, but was subsequently changed to avoid possible confusion with Adenovirus.
